'Your Circumstances Cannot Break God’s Promises' Lance Wallnau

Imagine a moment suspended in time where the divine orchestrates a symphony of events, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. This is not just a story; it's a revelation of faith, a narrative where every act of trust intertwines with God's magnificent plan. Today, I believe the Lord wants me to tell you the remarkable story of Alexander H. Kerr, a man whose life became a testament to the power of faith, obedience, and a display of God’s favor.

Kerr's journey began in the early 1900s, a period of significant uncertainties. Yet, amidst these challenges, Kerr was converted under the ministry of Dwight L. Moody at the age of fourteen and joined the Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. Not long after, he discovered a pivotal truth that would forever alter the course of his life. He came across a profound vow made by Jacob in Genesis 28: "Of all that Thou shalt give me, I will surely give the tenth unto Thee." As we know, 20 years later, this same Jacob returned to his home with servants and cattle in great abundance. He became one of the rich men of the East due to keeping his covenant of tithing with the Lord God. This ancient practice of tithing, seemingly simple, was imbued with a profound spiritual significance.

With a mix of trepidation and hope, Kerr embraced this covenant of tithing on June 1, 1902. It was a decision that transcended financial contribution; it was an expression of unwavering faith in God's providence. The impact was immediate and miraculous. Kerr's life was transformed, blessings and opportunities unfolded, each a divine appointment, each a testament to the unbreakable favor of God.

Within three months after Mr. Kerr began to tithe, unexpected and unforeseen favor and blessings came to him – so much so that it seemed to him that God was positioning him for increase ever since he began tithing or giving one-tenth of what God gave him.

He made a modest investment of one hundred dollars, and nurtured by his faith; it blossomed into the Kerr Glass Manufacturing Corporation, the world’s largest glass company based in San Fransisco. No mere coincidence; it was a divine orchestration, a series of God-ordained encounters and blessings.

Then came his greatest test!

However, the true testament to his faith was revealed during the catastrophic 1906 San Francisco earthquake. At 5:12 PST on Wednesday, April 18th, the coast of Northern California was struck by a major earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 7.9. Devastating fires broke out in San Francisco that lasted for four days. Over 80% of the city was destroyed! The event is remembered as the deadliest earthquake in the history of the United States. Between 227,000 and 300,000 people were left homeless out of a population of about 410,000.

Kerr’s friends approached him and said, "You are a ruined man." He replied, "I don’t believe it… I know God will not go back on His promises.

His friends made those comments with good reason, though; his factory was a wood frame building containing two large tanks where glass was melted and kept at a heat of twenty-six hundred degrees. Oil was used for fuel.

The building, one of the most flammable in San Francisco, was in the middle of the four-day inferno. He sent a telegram to San Francisco—he was in Portland, Oregon, at the time—and received this replay: “Your factory is in the heart of the fire, and undoubtedly is destroyed. The heat is so intense we will be unable to find out anything for some days."

But his faith in the Eternal Most High never wavered. He believed Malachi 3:11: "I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground." He stood on this promise unmoved.

About a week after the earthquake and fire, a second telegram arrived saying: "Everything for a mile and a half on all sides of the factory burned; but only your factory was miraculously saved." The fire had raged on all sides of this glass factory, creeping up to the little wooden fence surrounding the building. Then, the flames and fire leaped around and over and beyond the building, burning everything in its path without scorching. However, not even the wooden fence was touched, nor the building, and not a single glass jar was cracked by earthquake or fire.

Kerr's story vividly illustrates what it means to live a life aligned with God's word and promises. Amidst the chaos and destruction, Kerr's factory, vulnerable and exposed, stood unscathed. It clearly demonstrated divine protection and the power of a covenant kept with the Almighty. It's a narrative that beckons us to step into our own journey of faith and divine appointments.
