There will always be signs in the sky. Some of these signs reveal to us that God is at work. These signs take place apart from the highest advancements of our science and our accomplishments no matter where our understanding falls on the timeline of human history. No matter how advanced our society might become, a sign in the heavens will always draw our attention.
In the next few weeks, several of these signs will appear. There will be an eclipse that will travel across the United States. The eclipse is getting a lot of press at this time. Other events will also happen during the eclipse. A comet will appear along with a cosmic explosion. All three events will be visible from Earth.
These signs do not occur to instill fear in a believer’s heart. They show us that God’s timeline is very different from the timeline we are experiencing on Earth. Scripture reminds us how to process these events when they happen. There are reasons for their appearance.
Jeremiah warned us about allowing fear to steer our thinking when these events occur. “Do not act like the other nations, who try to read their future in the stars. Do not be afraid of their predictions, even though other nations are terrified by them” (Jeremiah 10:2). As events unfold in the heavens, choose not to allow fear to interpret your understanding or cause you to venture into interpretations not sourced from God.
When Peter was preaching on the Day of Pentecost, he referenced the prophet Joel who spoke of God’s work in the heavens, “And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and clouds of smoke” (Acts 2:19). God is the one who orchestrates movement in the heavens. It is His hand we are watching.
Jesus spoke several times about the stars, sky, and space. The skies can reveal a larger understanding than any earthbound forecast might create. “You know how to interpret the weather signs in the sky, but you don’t know how to interpret the signs of the times!” (Matthew 16:3).
In the coming days as these aligning signs appear in the skies and manifest on Earth, look for an interpretation not crafted by a fear of the unknown or any earthly understanding. Look to God who is drawing our attention to something over which we have no control. The Lord is speaking to His Church through signs and wonders. Not all He is saying at this time will be transmitted by words.
