I've been considering the Armour of God over the last few months, and have been more and more amazed at the dynamic of life and protection that life in Christ provides. The concept of a helmet of salvation is no different.
A helmet offers active protection to the head, but it is passive in its approach.
Merely owning a helmet does nothing if it is not used – but once it is placed on the head, it does not need to move. Its existence in the correct place is all that is needed but it does not come to place accidentally. The salvation inferred by the helmet is present, active and intentional and highlights the dynamic link between salvation and our mind.
Often, Paul writes on the importance of putting on 'the new man', speaking of it much more than I have heard it spoken of in sermons today. Paul writes about how the unsaved walk in the futility of their mind. Walking in ignorance and with blinded hearts – not perceiving what God is doing.
This may seem like a clumsy connection, but I think there is a great connection between the two. In Romans 8:6 Paul writes: 'For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.' Paul is highlighting the importance of our thought-life and ultimately, where we place our hope, expectation and communion.
The Book of Romans is fascinating and deep. Paul wrote: 'There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.' (Rom 8:1-2) The law of sin and death is defined in the struggle that the unsaved Paul had – there was no hope when he was trying to 'be righteous' (Romans 5-7). No matter how much he tried he always failed. Our hope is fulfilled in our salvation – and as we walk in the Spirit, the Holy Spirit Shapes us and is the Seal (guarantee) of our salvation. (Eph 1:13-14)
Our righteousness is our Armour, and the same goes for our mind. Placing our mind on the Lord is not just trying to do better, it's accepting the invitation for daily communion with Him. It is living under the Spirit of Life that sets us free from the commandments of the Law and fulfils the Law in us as Jeremiah foretold (Jeremiah 31:33). His redemption is not just salvation from death, it is a perpetual life of relationship where He draws us closer, into a dynamic of lived righteousness and declared righteousness. It is the seat in heavenly places.
Wherever we place our hope – our thoughts – is where our strength is going to come from. To try to do it carnally will not work, but to place our faith in God is forsaking the ways and thoughts of the past. In this life is power, redemption and peace. (Galatians 5:16)
I titled this the Helm, and not just because it is another word for a helmet - but when we set our mind on God He takes the wheel. And in that place is protection. Remember, 'God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.' (2 Timothy 1:7)
Paul uses a lot of language that shows the importance of a life lived well, showing in his own life the intentionality of the lifestyle he exhorted the church to model. However, with anxiety levels increasing among many in the world, it is good to know that this invitation is before us all – for His peace is a great bastion for us all.
