"At that time Jesus answered and said, 'I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes.'" (Matthew 11:25)
My precious friends, the Lord has been stirring something precious in my spirit about how He reveals His deepest treasures.
Let me share what He's showing me about the beautiful mystery of knowing God beyond mere information.
I've been meditating on Jesus' striking words in Matthew 11, in which He thanks the Father for deliberately hiding certain truths from some while revealing them to others. Did you catch that? “You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes.”
There are divine revelations that God intentionally withholds from certain people! He says, "No, I'm not letting you in on that one. I won't let you in on this truth."
Who are these people from whom God hides His deeper revelations? Jesus calls them "the wise and prudent." Don't get the wrong idea—this isn't about education or intelligence. God does not oppose learning or knowledge in itself. As Walter Beuttler has often said, “He doesn't put a premium on ignorance!”
I sense in my spirit that "the wise and prudent" refers to the intellectually conceited – those spiritual snobs who stick their noses up with an "I know it all" attitude. They're so filled with pride that they cannot receive it. And oh, how tragic! Some are so wise in their own eyes that they don't even know enough to know they don't know!
Watch how differently God treats the humble—those childlike "babes" who approach Him with wonder, awe, and sincere openness! He delights in unveiling the mysteries of His heart to them, whispering secrets that the proud will never hear. He gives them what Jeremiah described as "a heart to know me."
This isn't about mental capacity but heart posture. We're not talking about knowing about God with the mind – we're speaking of knowing God in the heart. The difference is vast! One is information; the other is revelation. One comes through study, the other through surrender. One fills the head; the other transforms the soul.
I hear the Spirit saying that some of you have been approaching God with notebooks ready but hearts closed. You've been gathering facts about Him without experiencing deep communion with Him. You've been studying the doctrines of God without sitting in His presence.
And you've wondered why others seem to walk in revelation you've never received.
Oh, beloved, true knowledge of God does not come merely by acquiring information in the usual manner! That has its place, but it takes more than that. The final analysis requires God's revelation to our hearts by His Spirit. It demands what Jeremiah described: "I will give them a heart to know Me."
Is your cry today, "Oh Father, give me a heart to know You"? Are you humbly asking, "Enable me to really know You beyond facts and figures"? God will answer that prayer! He delights when we seek knowledge about Him and intimate knowledge of Him.
This is the beautiful invitation of Jeremiah 9: "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me."
God can be understood! Not exhaustively, for He is infinite, and we are finite. The secret things belong to Him alone. I've learned long ago to respect the silence of God. He doesn't tell us everything we'd like to know. Some things He keeps to Himself. But those things which are revealed belong to us and our children.
Rise, humble hearts! Your Father longs to share His secrets with you. He yearns to lift the veil between your understanding and His mysteries. He delights in revealing what remains hidden from the proud and self-sufficient.
For His bride – His glorious bride – carries not just knowledge but the manifest presence of God. She is not an intellectual snob. Yes, she studies to show herself approved, but she also carries a present word from God. It has life! It's creative! It's powerful! She has learned not just information about God but the very ways of God.
So let us bow our hearts today and pray: "Lord, let me not be among the arrogant, the prudent. I surrender all my intellectual pride, my spiritual snobbery, my know-it-all attitude. Make me like a child, wide-eyed with wonder, teachable in spirit, and humble in heart. Reveal to me what You hide from the wise and prudent. Give me a heart that truly knows You."
For in that humble knowing, we find not just information but transformation, not just facts but fellowship, not just doctrine but delight in the beauty of our wonderful Lord.
With Love,
Steve Porter
