Pastor Greg Laurie visited the White House last week for the National Day of Prayer, joining other faith leaders in a gathering marked by worship, intercession and a surprise meeting with the president. After spending time at this event, Laurie says he has a message for America.
“I’m in Washington, D.C., in Lafayette Park, which is across the street from the White House, and we just had the opportunity to be in the Rose Garden over at the White House for an observance of the National Day of Prayer,” Laurie shared. “It was a fantastic time. There was beautiful worship and prayer for our nation.”
Following the ceremony, Laurie and others were unexpectedly invited into the Oval Office. “We spoke with the president for a few moments and he gave us all a commemorative coin, and it’s just fantastic,” he said.
Laurie addressed critics who question his visits to the White House, emphasizing the importance of honoring those in authority regardless of political affiliation.
“Look, this is our capital and the White House is our house. I would go to the White House if any president invited me, regardless if I voted for them or not,” he said. “And if they ask for prayer, I would pray for any president. I’m commanded—we are commanded in Scripture—to pray for those that are in leadership over us.”
Laurie believes his visit to the White House for the National Day of Prayer is an excellent example for Christians to rise above partisanship and focus on what truly matters. “Sometimes we get so caught up in our partisan ideas that we forget the big picture. We’re talking about prayer,” Laurie said.
Beyond all of our politics and partisanship in America, Laurie believes that there is only one way we can truly experience healing in our nation: Through the power of the Gospel.
With this, he offered a simple twofold prescription for the spiritual health of the nation: “Number one, pray for our nation. Pray that God would pour out His Spirit. Pray that God would send another spiritual awakening.” He added, “Number two, preach the gospel. That is the only thing that will change a person. That’s the only thing that can then in effect change culture. And then that is the only thing that can in its ultimate effect change the nation.”
Reflecting on the current moment, Laurie said he sees encouraging signs. “Are we on the brink of another spiritual awakening? I think that’s entirely possible. A lot of interesting things happening. A lot of cultural shifts happening right now. And it makes one wonder, is the Lord getting ready to pour His Spirit out again? Let’s pray that happens.”
Above all, he asked Christians to carry on with faithfully in their witness and prayer. “I count it a privilege to be invited here anytime—to have whatever influence I can have to let my light so shine before men. So let’s continue to pray for our nation. We need it more than ever. We really do.”
Only through these powerful acts of faith can we hope to see a cultural shift that leads to a spiritual awakening. With signs of revival on the horizon, Laurie’s call to action is both an invitation and a challenge—an invitation to be part of the change God desires, and a challenge to rise above political divides and focus on what truly unites us: the love and hope found in Christ.
