'God is Breaking the Chains of Shame' Steve Porter

“And because of your raging against me and your arrogance, which I have heard for myself, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth. I will make you return by the same road on which you came.” —2 Kings 19:28 (NLT) There’s a disturbing image echoed in both the Bible and history. A scene of raw humiliation. Cruel bondage. The Assyrians were notorious for their brutality. They didn’t just conquer but they love to degrade. Captives were pierced with sharp hooks…through the nose or even the lips. Then they were dragged away like animals. Paraded. Shamed. Stripped of all dignity. Dehumanized. Archaeological reliefs and ancient writings confirm this horror. This was not merely a metaphor. It was real.

And yet… As horrific as that was, dear friend, there’s something even more cruel. Something far worse than ancient chains. A torment still alive today. Still hunting. Still claiming victims. And it doesn’t wear armor. It hides in plain sight. It’s not Assyria, but the enemy of our soul, who still desires to place a hook in the mouths of those caught in spiritual bondage. All around us, both close to home and far away, there are men and women in our own churches quietly carrying invisible chains. The hook is in. They’ve tried to get free, but something still pulls them into cycles of shame, addiction, fear, or sin. They feel paraded before others, helpless and exposed. Humiliation stalks them. And the enemy rejoices as if to say, “Look at the once-faithful one, now chained… now conquered.” The same spirit that laughed at Samson when his compromise cost him his vision. They gouged out his eyes, chained him to a millstone, and he walked in endless circles…grinding grain, going nowhere. The once-mighty champion, now mocked in the courts of his enemies. He was trotted out before the crowds—not to fight…but to be humiliated. This was no ordinary man; he had carried gates on his shoulders and struck down lions and armies. And now? Just a blind man in chains. But, friend, that’s not where his story ends. And it’s not where yours ends, either. There is gospel hope today, even for those who feel the tug of that cruel hook. Jesus breaks chains, removes the hook, and restores what was lost. The humiliation the enemy meant to destroy you will become your platform of deliverance and testimony. The Word says Samson’s hair began to grow again. His strength returned. His spiritual sight, though once dimmed, began to ignite afresh. And in his final moments, he did more to bring down the enemy’s house than ever. This is a prophetic picture for many in this hour. There are men and women who believed they would never be free, but the Spirit of the Lord is removing the hook. The circles are ending. Blindness is being healed. The mocking voices are being silenced. The Colosseum of shame is crumbling. The Lord is roaring over His beloved ones and calling them out of captivity. No more being led around by your past. No more being defined by your worst moments. No more humiliation parades orchestrated by hell. God is restoring. God is redeeming. God is delivering. “And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten…” (Joel 2:25 KJV). Yes, even the years that were lost in shame and even the years spent going in circles. Even the strength you thought would never return. A mighty army shall rise…those once bound, now free. Those once mocked are now anointed. Those once led by hooks are now led by the Spirit. Child of God, lift your head. The enemy doesn’t get the final word…JESUS DOES! The hook is being removed. The shame is being lifted. And you will stand again, not as a trophy of failure, but as a testimony of grace. Welcome back, warrior. Your story isn’t over. It’s just beginning.
